USS Lexington was laid down as CC-1, the lead ship of a class of six battlecruisers; the original design with 10-14" guns is shown here. All were cancelled due to the Washington Naval Treaties, but two were allowed to complete as aircraft carriers, including the Lexington which became CV-2.
