Quiz #82

Click on any ship Savannah Warspite

Both USS Savannah and HMS Warspite were victims of German guided bombs while providing gunfire support to the Salerno invasion. Savannah was hit by a FX1400 guided bomb on 11 Sep 1943, which penetrated the roof of her third turret and exploded deep in the ship; the inrush of seawater prevented a magzine explosion. Savannah was repaired at Malta and then rebuilt (as shown here) in the US, but never sent into combat again. Warspite was partially repaired and returned to action in June 1944. She provided gunfire support at Normandy (although X turret was out of action) and finally for the landings on Walcheren in November.
