All three Japanese ships were part of Vice Admiral J. Ozawa's Northern Force in the Battle of Cape Engaño, 25 October 1944, one part of the larger Battle of Leyte Gulf. Aircraft carrier Zuikaku was the force flagship until damaged by American aircraft; Ozawa then transferred his flag to cruiser Oyodo. Zuikaku and three light aircraft carriers were subsequently sunk, along with destroyer Akizuki.
