Quiz #40

Click on any ship Beaverford Admiral Scheer

German pocket battleship Admiral Scheer encountered convoy HX-84, 5 Nov 1940 in the North Atlantic. The 37-ship convoy was escorted by armed merchant cruiser Jervis Bay, which bravely sacrificed herself (and earned her Capt E.S.F. Fegen a posthumous Victoria Cross) by charging her much bigger opponent. Canadian Pacific freighter Beaverford attempted to aid in this defense while the convoy scattered, but was also sunk with all hands. Four other ships were sunk but the remainder escaped as night fell.
