Collision off Nantucket, 25 July 1956. Stockholm of the Swedish-American Line, shortly after departing from New York, collided with the incoming Andrea Doria of the Italia Line. Stockholm had considerable damage to her own bow, and the Andrea Doria sank some 11 hours later. A total 1,660 passengers and crew were rescued, but 46 people perished in the collision.
