Japanese armed merchant cruiser Hokoku Maru and sister Aikoku Maru attacked Dutch tanker Ondina and Indian Navy escort RIN minesweeper HMIS Bengal 11 Nov 1942 SW of the Cocos Islands in the Indian Ocean. The two Allied vessels put up such a spirited defense that the Japanese vessels broke off the engagement after Hokoku Maru caught fire, then exploded and sank. Ondina was damaged, but repaired and survived the war.
