Mer-el-Kebir, 3 July 1940. French battleships Provence and sister Bretagne were both present at Mers-el-Kebir, the French naval base near Oran, Algeria, on 3 Jul 1940 when a British ultimatum, designed to prevent the French fleet from falling into German hands, was refused. Adm Somerville in battlecruiser Hood, leading Force "H", which also included battleships Valiant and Resolution, fired on the French ships. Bretagne blew up and capsized; Provence was badly damaged and beached in the harbor.
