Quiz #1

Click on any ship Saratoga Nagato Prinz Eugen

Aircraft carrier USS Saratoga, Japanese battleship IJN Nagato, and German heavy cruiser DKM Prinz Eugen, were all used as targets at the postwar atomic bomb tests of Operations Crossroads. The tests were held at Bikini Atoll in the Marshall Islands. The first blast was test "Able" on 1 July 1946. An airdropped weapon missed its target, battleship USS Nevada, by 1/4 mile, and sank or damaged only a few of the many target ships. The second blast, test "Baker" on 25 July, was an underwater explosion which did much greater damage, causing Saratoga to sink the same day, while Nagato foundered on 29 July. Prinz Eugen was heavily strained, but was towed to Kwajelein, where she capsized and sank in shallow water, 22 December 1946.
