- Service: Commissioned for the French Line in May 1935 and took the Blue Riband from the Italian Rex. A year later, lost the title for fastest crossing to Britain's Queen Mary. Regained pennant in 1937, but lost it again to the Queen Mary in 1938. Le Havre-New York service. Laid up at New York, September 1939; seized by U.S. authorities, December 1941, and renamed USS Lafayette. Conversion began to 15,000-troop-capacity transport but she caught fire and capsized at her New York pier, February 9, 1942. Later salvaged and broken up, 1946-47.
